Three measures to improve the sugar content and quality of sugar beet roots

In order to strengthen the guidance of sugar beet production in autumn, the National Agricultural Technology Extension Service Center and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Sugar Experts Guidance Group researched and formulated the “Guidelines for Autumn Production Technology of Sugar Beet in 2019” according to the production characteristics of sugar beet production areas. The general requirements are: strengthen the field management of sugar beet growth, control pests and diseases, control nitrogen and water, harvest at the right time, and effectively increase the sugar content and quality of sugar beet roots.

First, strengthen field management

Nitrogen fertilizer is no longer applied in the later stage of beet growth and the amount of water is controlled. Avoid artificial damage to beet leaves to reduce production. For sugar beet in drip irrigation mode, the drip irrigation facilities should be recovered in time before harvesting; the sugar beet should be recovered before harvesting, and the residual film on the surface should be removed manually after harvest.

Second, prevention and control of pests and diseases

The late growth stage of sugar beet is a key period for sugar accumulation. Due to the excessive rain in the early stage, it is necessary to timely control the occurrence of diseases and insect pests of sugar beet leaves, especially attention to diseases such as sugar beet brown spot, root rot and powdery mildew, and beet cabbage night. Prevention and control of pests such as moth, Lithium californica and spider mites. For the beetroot rot and tuberculosis occurrence plots, it is recommended that the growers carry out centralized inventory and deep burial treatment during the harvesting process; for heavy weed plots, the grass can be properly removed manually to reduce miscellaneous Grass damage, weeds with lighter weeds may not be removed, try to prevent damage to functional leaves.

Third, timely harvest storage

  Weather changes should be closely monitored and harvested in time before the frost arrives. Large-scale growers can harvest by combined harvesting or segmentation, and small-scale scattered growers can harvest by segmentation. In the case of unacceptable machine, mechanical excavation, manual picking and cutting, or cutting with a cutting machine, mechanical digging and manual picking can be used. When stacking after harvesting, it is necessary to pay attention to the ventilation and ventilation of the piles to prevent mildew and decay. Beets should be sold in time after collection. Beets that cannot be sold in time should be carefully stored, improve storage quality, and reduce “frozen vegetables”.
